Abstract :
Tux-venture is aimed at providing an impetus for students to get familiar with the Linux Operating System, and encourage its use. The competition will therefore consist of beginner to intermediate level problems aimed at testing the understanding of the OS concepts, scripting skills of the participant, and basic play-around knowledge with computers.
The aim of this event is to make people learn and understand about how things work in a linux machine. It serves a good platform for the beginners who are interested enough to nurture and develop their existing knowledge on Linux.
Event Structure :
The competition will consist of two categories:
- Programming Contest
- Desktop Design Contest
Programming Contest

The On-line Screening Test:
- The qualification round will be held on February 1st.
- This will consist of objective type questions covering a variety of topics relating to the general use of the OS, factual information, and scripting and command knowledge.
- The participants will be taking the test on-line and will be required to answer the questions in the given time.
- Short-listing for the finals will be based on the relative performance of the competitors.
- bash 3.2.39 will be used for evaluation.

The On-line Finals:
- Top 20 teams from the On-line qualification round will proceed to the finals and this will consist of problems to test the general understanding of the participants concepts of the operating system, networking , shell scripting and command line interface.
- The problems will vary in difficulty, and will have credits associated with them accordingly.
- The Final round will last for 2 hours but can be extended if the participants are enthusiastic.
- The Final round will be held online. More details coming up soon.
Desktop Design Contest
- The Desktop Design Contest is a seperate contest which is open for all registrants. The contest is aimed at designing eye-candy Desktops for Linux. Click here for details.
Any one with a keen interest on Linux is game for this . We want the participants to see for themselves the strength of Linux, so we want to maximise participation and increase competition.
For first time users:
- We would suggest you firstly, to install a Linux distro on your machine and start using it. Get familiar with the environment and the Linux philosophy, the command line, and the 'Linux' way of doing things.
- Get used to man pages and learning things through man pages.
For people who have used Linux before, but are unsure where to go now:
- See www.linuxcommand.org. It’s a great website for beginners to learn basic commands and apply them.
- Also take a look at the Linux Documentation Project(www.tldp.org). These are also the documentation files which we will be providing.
- o Try to use the commands, and try to understand how things are done in linux. We assure you you will be in with more than a chance.
For Pro Users:
- There are plenty of pitfalls in the competition to surprise you lot.
