Are you a user of free and open source software?

Are you a Linux User?

Then this is just the event for you. Probably you should be knowing about the Shell, yes you will be. For those without a clue, let's simply say Shell is where all those Linux Commands are typed out.

The Shell is powerful. Powerful enough to do anything. But then, how should 'anything' be defined?

We need you to do just that.

'Crack the Shell' is all about solving simple day to day tasks on your computer through the terminal.

Event Format

This is an online event. Participation is possible from anywhere in the world.

  • Round 1: Do you Know Linux? (Online Objective Round)
  • Round 2: Heard of Shell? (Online Shell Scripting Round)
  • Round 3: Survival of the Fittest (Online Shell Scripting Round)

Round One

The first round consists of a simple objective test. This round is eliminative and the teams which clear the first round will face more tux in the further rounds.

Round Two

The second round will require you to have a deeper understanding about the shell. We will give you a set of problems, which we need you to solve using shell scripts and mail it to us. Make sure that your solutions follow the KISS (Keep It Short & Simple) principle.

Clearing the second round is just not enough. Here we need you to send us questions. Yes, come and don our caps, create questions and send them (with a solution). Your selection to the third round shall be confirmed based on your question's originality! (Be in touch with us and we shall help you to some extent with this!)

Round Three

The third and the final round is different. It is a face-off between the teams qualified for the final round, where you will face questions sent in by other teams. So make sure your question doesn't let your opponents crack the shell quicker than you. Winners will be declared based on the difficulty of  the question they submitted, and how many questions they could solve in the 'Survival of the Fittest' round.

The shell questions we mentioned won't be anything like those mathematical questions. We sometimes face some task during our day to day use of Linux. Say, like removing the “New Folder” virus from your flash drive, or copying all types of media files from your flash drive to your hard drive. It's best if you got a script that does the trick. It saves you from the effort of going through each and every folder hunting files. Yes, GUI alternatives exist, but we just love the Shell. We expect you to use it and unveil it's power.
