Introduction
Mash-It-Up

Cash Prizes and Goodies worth 27000 INR to be won!

Do you spend too much time organizing, aggregating and analyzing data from Microsoft Excel, Microsoft, Powerpoint, Microsoft databases and Microsoft SharePoint?

These are no longer just desktop productivity tools but sources of highly value data. Unfortunately, these data sources are often disconnected islands of information. And that means it costs you time, money, and frustration.

If you’re like a growing number of knowledge workers and agile developers, you’ll jump at the chance to user enterprise mashups that radically improve your information productivity.

For the ignorant, a mashup is a web page or application that combines data or functionality from two or more external sources to create a new service. The term mashup implies easy, fast integration, frequently using open APIs and data sources to produce results that were not the original reason for producing the raw source data. An example of a mashup is the use of cartographic data to add location information to real estate data, thereby creating a new and distinct web API that was not originally provided by either source.

Some examples of well-known Mash-Ups include:

  • TweetDeck: TweetDeck is an Adobe AIR desktop Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace application. Like other Twitter applications it interfaces with the Twitter API to allow users to send and receive tweets and view profiles. It is the most popular Twitter application today.
  • Google Maps API: Google created the Google Maps API to allow developers to integrate Google Maps into their websites with their own data points. By using the Google Maps API, it is possible to embed the full Google Maps site into an external website.

Why are Mash-Ups so exciting?

  • Effective leverage of Web parts and the Global SOA.
  • Simple, lightweight software models and services.
  • A focus on self-service and DIY.

Mashups are generally built out of the bits, pieces, and services of other Web applications that already exist, adding code only when it can't be sourced from internal or external suppliers or to provide integration "glue" between the parts.
