Introduction
NSR

There are people, there are institutions, and there are people who are institutions. Prof N S Ramaswamy is one such luminary who falls into the third category.

There are so many sides to N. S. Ramaswamy. On one side, he is The Bhishmacharya of the management movement in the country, a strong campaigner for animal welfare, teacher, consultant, adviser to various governmental and non governmental organizations and educational institutions, a selfless and concerned citizen, a man with rock-like values. On the other there is the simple, jocular, kind man, with a positive attitude to life. A vegetarian who has spearheaded the movement for modernization of abattoirs; a Marxist who espouses the path of spirituality; the Founder Director of IIM Bangalore who has thrown to winds the conventional theory of management. Professor N S Ramaswamy, who was bestowed the Padma Bhushan in 2006, apparently appears to be a bundle of contradictions. He, however, insists that he is simply a philosopher: a spiritualist who seeks practical ways of implementing his ideas at the terrestrial level.

Professor Ramaswamy has had a long, distinguished career as an academic of the highest calibre. A graduate of the University of Madras and then of Stanford University, he has been one of the pioneers of management education in India since its inception. His contributions have resulted in management studies acquiring a social, human front - in areas like power, transport, and rural development.

Most notable, however is his role in setting up the famed Indian Institute of Management at Bangalore - one of the leading Business Schools globally. His vision has resonated over the ages in making IIMB the colossus in the field of management education that it is today, and his contribution in building such institutions testify to his monumental stature in Indian education. Not only this, he has been honoured as a National Research Professor, putting him in esteemed company with legends like Dr C V Raman and Dr S N Bose.

Pragyan presents this once in a lifetime opportunity to interact with one of the doyens of modern management education. Be there and be enthralled!!
