Pragyan 2011 - Delta-T

Delta-T

Cash prizes increased to 35,000 INR !!!

The event is scheduled to be held on 19th February from 09:00a.m. at CEESAT.

The 2011 edition of Delta-T has just got a little better and, and of course, more challenging! This year, we take a step further than just merely heating or cooling the water. We are jumping into real serious industrial applications, where change in temperature IS the primary concern.

You'd have got it by now.... Yes!! A Heat Exchanger!!

The opportunity to prove yourself a real engineer lies right in front of you, waiting for your grasp.... Get that intellect mind of yours running, wrack your brains! Your days of just sketching it in a classroom are over, Get down to the real thing and show us what you've got!

Build that heat exchanger!!

And ya..., as usual..., no using electricity this time either!

Problem Statement:

Design a simple heat exchanger which uses the given hot water to heat the water given at normal room temperature without using electricity.

Judging Criteria:

  • The elevation in temperature in the normal water given at room temperature initially.
  • The time taken for the entire process.
  • Area occupied should be within the specified dimensions, else marks will be deducted.
  • Originality in design.

Rules and Regulations:

  • Maximum 3 persons per team.
  • Each team will be provided with 2 litres of water at room temperature and 2 litres of water at elevated temperature (60-70oC).
  • The area occupied by the design should be within 1.5m X 1.5m.
  • The water should not be contaminated before, during or after the heat exchange process.
  • There should not be any volume loss in the water to be heated.
  • The entire process should be completed in the least time possible (which should not exceed 10 min).
  • No other heating and/or electrical device allowed. Exothermic reactions should NOT be used.
  • Mixing of fluids is not allowed.
  • No external help should be sought once the process starts.
  • Unwanted and unnecessary actions or behaviour by participant shall not be tolerated, and will lead to disqualification of the  team.
  • Marks will be deducted for any actions violating the above rules.
  • Judge’s decision is final.
