Have you ever thought about which section of steel could yield the maximum compressive strength in a column? If so, put all your skills into making that one column which could resist even the maximum axial compression.

Fabricate a column whose cross-section could be of any shape pertaining to the problem statement.

The abstract submission deadline is extended to 06-03-2019

Date: 16th March 2019 (Day 2)
Time: 9:00 AM
Venue: Seminar Hall, Civil Department

There will be two rounds in this event.

Round 1:

An abstract should be submitted containing the following details:

  • Dimensions of the column
  • Profile of the cross-section of the column
  • The standard which is followed
  • Maximum axial compressive strength expected
  • It will be an eliminative round.

Deadline for abstract submission: 06-03-2019

Round 2:
• Participants will have to bring the fabricated column to NIT Trichy during Pragyan which will be tested for axial compression followed by an oral presentation to the judge.
• Bring the hardcopy of the abstract while coming for Pragyan.

Rules:

  • Maximum of three members per team.

  • The participants should adhere to the problem statement, any deviation from it will lead to rejection of the team.

  • In case of a tie, judges’ decision will be final.

Judging criteria:

  • Design, Innovation and Report: 30%
  • Maximum load carrying capacity (strength to weight ratio): 30%
  • Fabrication and Aesthetic appearance: 10%
  • Oral Presentation to judge: 30%

Fabricate a cold formed steel column of 1m length with maximum lateral dimensions of 150 mm X 150 mm and thickness of 2 mm for axial load

Specifications:
• Boundary Conditions: Both ends rotation free and translation fixed
• The cross section can be of any shape
• Design should be based on any standard codes
• The column should be fitted with a plate both at the top and bottom for applying load

Deadline for abstract submission: 06-03-2019
