SUNEET TULI

Empowering billions around the world and uplifting people through technology is what he does best. Mr. Suneet Tuli, CEO of Datawind, a company specialising in wireless web access products and services, is a name to reckon with. He is the mastermind behind the world’s cheapest tablet, the Aakash 2, which has been unanimously hailed as the product that will revolutionise the world in the days to come. Datawind made its entry into the Indian market with the Aakash tablet, developed for the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), which had pledged to provide students with affordable means of technology. And sure enough, Datawind created a stir when they started to manufacture the tablets at the cost of $35 per tablet. The Aakash 2 tablet was launched by Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, the Secretary General of the United Nations in November 2012. Since then, it has lived up to the expectations and hype surrounding it and needless to say, orders have been pouring in.

Awards and accolades rest easy on this man’s shoulders. Forbes magazine recognized him as a ‘classroom revolutionary’ in its 2012 Impact 15 list. He was also awarded the ‘Technology Achievement Award’ by the Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce. In response to Aakash being referred to as the ‘iPad Killer’, he said, “I don’t care about creating the iPad killer. I care about the 3 billion people who can afford this device.” A man who walks the talk, Mr. Tuli is now engaged in Datawind’s newest venture to manufacture cheap Android smartphones with free internet for under 3000 INR. That’s what we meant when we said empowering people is what he does best!
