Applications of Machine Learning

Machine learning is one of the most exciting technologies that one would have ever come across. As it is evident from the name, it gives the computer that which makes it more similar to humans: The ability to learn. Machine learning is actively being used today, perhaps in many more places than one would expect. We probably use a learning algorithm dozens of time without even knowing it. With the exponential growth of technology, we not only need better tools to understand the data we currently have, but we also need to prepare ourselves for the data we will have. To achieve this goal we need to build intelligent machines.

About the Organiser

The session will be conducted by Mr Rupayan Banerjee. He has been associated with Microsoft for the past 3.5 years and is currently a Program Manager at Microsoft. He was previously a consultant at Microsoft in the Data & AI domain and has delivered sessions on Machine Learning across the globe.

Course Introduction & Learning outcome

1) Outlines and reach of Machine Learning:

What exactly is Machine Learning or AI? How is it different from normal programming? What are the questions that ML answers? What processes are followed? Which platform would you require for performing experiments? Overview of the algorithms are going to be discussed moving on.

2) Understanding Linear Regression:

Delving into a bit of mathematics first in trying to grasp the fundamental pillar on which one of the most popular techniques i.e. Regression is built on and  talking about the use-cases of Linear Regression and finally demonstrate an experiment showing linear regression.

3 )Classification problem:

In this case, the participants will deploy a classification problem all by themselves. Since classification problems resemble linear regression, therefore, this will be a great way of understanding their foothold on ML till now. The participants will try to find out who had the highest possibility of survival in the Titanic accident.

4) Forecasting overview and demonstration:

In this session, a brief introduction about forecasting will be given. Then show how we can use R code and even use Power BI to forecast results.

5) Cluster Analysis:

In this session, we look at the Cluster analysis and then deploy a small experiment on Azure Machine Learning. The participants will then see how Power BI eases that up, and just by understanding the concept we can then apply it as well.

6) Recommendation:

In this session, a briefing about the fundamental tenets of a recommendation engine. Giving examples as in how an Amazon or a Netflix recommends what you would want next. It will then be followed up with an extensive solution that mimics real-world scenarios.

7)Sentiment analysis:

Will brief about how a computer can understand human language. Then explain about the metrics required for its calculation. After showing an elaborate experiment that does this, we will then introduce Cognitive Services as a plug and play option for doing complex things like Sentiment analysis.

8)Emotion analysis and face recognition:

Once the participants have been introduced to Cognitive Services, then an explaination on the broad array that it serves and how even emotion analysis or face recognition can be enabled by using Cognitive Services even with very limited knowledge of ML or AI.
