CIRCUIT A THON

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

"We are all now connected by the internet, like neurons in a giant brain."

- Stephen Hawking

With a strong WiFi connection, the first thing that comes to mind to provide a possible solution to any situation related to academics, content, communication, and entertainment is the Internet. Nearly everyone in today’s world surfs on the Internet to tackle their problems. Have you ever thought how to combine the Internet’s unique power with some of your basic electronics know-how to make your day-to-day activity more easy and interesting? If you are that enthusiast then this platform is perfect for you. Time has come now to extend the limits of your electronic brain with the potential capacity of the Internet.

EVENT FORMAT:
The event consist of two rounds

Round 1: ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
  • Participants have to submit the abstract specifying the details of their model(circuit) for any of the given problem statements.
  • The top 10 teams will be selected based on the creativity, sustainability, design, economy of the circuit, and more for the 2nd Round.
  • The abstract must be mailed to circuitathon@pragyan.org by 11:59 pm, 30th October 2017.
Round 2: FINAL ROUND
  • This round involves practical implementation of circuits for the given problem statements.
  • Teams will have to assemble the components in their desired circuit in the least time possible.
  • The components to implement the circuit will be provided on the spot.
  • The list of permitted components will be provided to all shortlisted participants by email.
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
1. Intruder Alert

When we're talking about home security systems, they are simply networks of integrated electronic devices working together with a control panel, against burglars and otherpotential intruders. There are several elements of protection that need to be taken care of.
One of the most important aspects of such a system is that any unwanted motion in the house must be detected and the resident must be notified about it as soon as possible. There are various electronic circuits to detect the presence of any nearby objects (stationary or moving), without actually coming in contact with them. In such a case, the system must be able to reach out to its resident and pass on this information by sending a message (E-mail).
Also, when such incidents occur, a camera placed at a proper height must be able to capture the image of the intruder, whose motion has been detected. This image must be stored locally so that it can be retrieved for further use.
Design a system which has the capabilities as mentioned above.
Bonus : Further, the image which has been captured must be processed to detect if the motion has been caused by a human or any unwanted disturbance by analysing the image and that information must also be sent to the resident.

2. Reading Assistant

Reading for long hours in regions facing a deficiency of light causes several issues related to the eye. A lot of us tend to continue this routine without actually knowing the consequences of it.
Therefore the lighting conditions of the reading area has to be monitored on the basis of the intensity of natural light available at any given point of time.
Whenever the conditions become critically unsafe for the reader to continue reading, the reader has to be informed through a message. Also, values have to be stored in the cloud, for the user to later analyse and keep track of how long he has been reading, and on his lighting environment.
Design a system keeping in mind the above constraints in the most novel manner possible.
Bonus : Automatically adjust the brightness of a table lamp based on the lighting conditions of the environment so that the user can continue reading on a safe environment.

JUDGING CRITERIA:

The participants will be judged based on the novelty of the solution that they are able to come up with.
Round 2 will be the Implementation Phase. The participants will have to build the prototype based on the abstract that they have submitted.
The Implementation Round will have a total of 100 points:

  • Interfacing – 10 points
  • Algorithm – 20 points
  • Coding – 15 points
  • Final Output – 15 points
  • Electronic Circuit Fabrication – 20 points
  • Explanation – 20 points

FAQs:

Q1. How many participants per team?
Ans: Maximum of three.
Q2. Are there any prerequisites for participating in this event?
Ans: Basic knowledge on electronics will suffice for participating in the event.
Q3. Can participants bring their own components for making the circuit in Round 2?
Ans: No. If a component is not present in the list provided, the participant may raise a request with the event manager. In case the request is approved, the participant may bring the desired components.
